Colorizing a vintage black-and-white photo used to mean trusting it to a skilled artist who hand-painted it. In our new Digital Age, going from black-and-white to color simply means uploading it to any computer nerd (us) with a decent photo-enhancement software program. What's the difference? Nothing, really - just how it's done in our Modern Times.
From Color to Black and White or Monotone . . . $35 to B&W, $40 to Monotone
Very dramatic effects can be achieved at a very reasonable price. Color to black-and-white is a piece of cake. Color to monotone is a piece of cake with iceing. P.S.: From an original black-and-white to monotone is $35.
From Black-and-White to Accent Color . . . $75 and up
Taking an old and cherished black-and-white photograph and colorizing just the central focus of the shot can be very dramatic. Unfortunately, I mis-judged the focus of this picture and colorized myself instead of the vintage car.
From Full Color to Accent Color . . . Original Accent Colors $35 to $70, New Accent Colors $75 and up
Jackie and Vivian - my surrogate grand-kids. Notice how the new black-and-white background is given a soft focus to de-emphasize it and to give depth to the picture.
Elf in the garden. All but Elf, the flowers and just one giant leaf was converted to black-and-white. Let your artistic imagination soar.
And below is a collage of Full Color to Accent Color photos.
Change of Hair Color . . . $50 and up
This is one of three Glamour Photos, taken by fashion photographer Edwin Williams, that I received from LisaBeth. Shortly after they were taken, LisaBeth had a wonderful Blonde Rebirth and wanted the photos to match her new persona. Hair is not easy to colorize, especially blonde hair, but, working under LisaBeth's direction, we did it.
From Black-and-White to Full Color . . . $80 and up
This Glamour Photo of Phyllis was was taken by a photographer in the French Quarter of New Orleans, where she (Phyllis, not the photographer) was the star improvisational dancer and main attraction at a joint called The Silver Slipper. Phyllis is now 85-years-young and resides at an assisted-living home in Mississippi. Pam, her volunteer caregiver and dear friend, sent us the original. They both said that they were thrilled by the results (modest me). And Phyllis is thinking of getting back into Show Biz.

Of course, most of the time you will want to go from black and white to color. This is a post-WW II photograph of Michael Horn, a friend of a friend, doing a ski tour of the Swiss alps. When he showed me the original and asked if it could be somehow improved, I replied "Sure, and I know exactly what's the matter, Horn." (I heard that groan!)
